preservation issues
Highlights
- In 2004, CPS joined with other Charlestown groups and residents to defeat a proposal to locate a Department of Homeland Security Detention and Removal Facility in City Square next to a heavily-populated residential neighborhood.
- In 2006 we successfully opposed location of a 240 foot long electronic billboard on the wall of the TD BankNorth Garden which had the potential to distract drivers on the bridge and disrupt views from the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the Town Hill National Register District, City Square Park, Paul Revere Park and the new Charles River Basin Parks.
- A new Charlestown building boom is underway, with large- scale developments proposed for the Rutherford Avenue corridor. Height and design decisions made today will affect how Charlestown will look for years to come. CPS is working to make sure these developments are appropriate to our town's unique character.
Preservation in Charlestown means more than protecting
and preserving antique houses and historic buildings.
It also means making sure new development respects
our unique historic fabric and sense of community.
CPS monitors development initiatives throughout
Charlestown and works to ensure their appropriateness
to our architectural heritage and quality of life.
The CPS Design Review Committee plays an active role
in examining and advising on new and existing
developments. The Design Review Committee is
also a valuable resource for homeowners planning
to renovate their houses.
