Preservation Month
Articles in Patriot-Bridge
You may have noticed the expanded coverage of CPS in the
Patriot-Bridge this May. To celebrate Preservation Month, we developed an
article series on historic landscapes in Charlestown.
The weekly articles highlighted the Phipps Street Burying
Ground, Doherty Playground, the Training Field and the Harvard Mall as a way
to increase awareness about the history and significance of these
greenspaces.
We’ve included the intro paragraphs to each article below. To

CPS Member Jack Glassman in
the News
Longtime CPS and CPS Design Review Committee member Jack
Glassman was recently featured in the National Trust for Historic
Preservation’s Preservation magazine for his role in restoring the
Classical Revival portico that’s sheltered Plymouth Rock for more than 80
years.
Jack was lead architect on the project, which won a 2009
Preservation Award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. You can see

Phipps St Burying Ground Clean-Up
The Phipps Street Burying Ground clean-up, an annual CPS
Preservation Month project, was held on May 15th. Despite being
rained out on its originally scheduled date, almost two dozen people showed
their support and community pride by helping tidy up our historic cemetery.
Since so many hands made light work, participants were able to
move down the street to a weeding and clean-up of Preservation Park, site of
the Charlestown holiday tree. CPS is the steward of this little pocket park.
Many thanks to all CPS members who participated!
CPS Historic Marker
Applications Now Being
Accepted
What better a way to recognize your historic home than with a
CPS historic marker?
These handsome bronze markers carry the date your house was built
and – if the historic records allow it -- the name of the builder or original
owner, helping convey its history to visitors and residents alike.
The historic marker program is accepting applications from now
until August 15, 2010. For more information and an application, just go to http://www.charlestownpreservation.org/historicmarkers.html
Historic House
Workshop Scheduled
CPS is holding a free "hands-on" workshop on how
to research your house (and find the info you need to complete your historic
marker application) on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Middlesex Registry of
Deeds in East Cambridge, with the time to be announced.
The workshop will help you learn more about your house and find the
documentation you need at the Registry to apply for a CPS historic house
marker.
The workshop is limited to the first 8 registrants. To sign up,
just leave a message on the CPS answering machine at 617 241 7500.
We'll call you to confirm your registration.
